Harvey Weinstein: 23 in jail for first degree and third-degree rape

Harvey Weinstein

Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in the big house. The sentence was handed down by Judge James Burke in a courtroom in Manhattan. The sentence handed down on Wednesday.

In his heydays, being a producer of a production house came with many advantages, he took them all to sexually assault and exploit young women. The dreams of the women were to be actresses and Harvey played them all. His extend of sexual exploitation was such that he had an array of spies to keep the woman in check in case they revealed his true self.

In October 2017, the New York Times published a story about the Hollywood Mogul that Harvey Weinstein was. That story detailed the sexual harassments that he had been meting out to women for decades. The testimonials were by Rose McGowan and Ashley Judd, two of Hollywood’s known names. The obscenity of his harassment was to the extent that he forced women to watch him naked and massage him. In return, he promised to advance their careers. A typical casting-couch scenario that worked like a charm and never failed.

He kept up with these antics for nearly for three decades. When cornered, Harvey issued an apology. Nevertheless, he was sacked by the board of his company. Then the witnesses started coming forward and allegations along with rape accusations were started building up. Weinstein’s spokeswoman shamelessly defends the accused stating that “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr Weinstein.” Actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie also came clean to say that they too were harassed by Harvey Weinstein.

Evidence and witnesses built a strong case against Harvey. The trial was argued on and defended through 2019. In February 2020 the deliberations begin. The jury is reminded by Judge James Burke that to convict Harvey Weinstein they all must be sure of the defendant’s guilt while reaching a unanimous verdict on each count. The warning to the jury was that if they cannot reach a consensus, the judge may be forced to declare a mistrial.

In the meanwhile, Harvey’s defence lawyer ends up writing an opinion piece and was warned to refrain from talking to the media.

Finally, Harvey was found guilty of a criminal sexual act in the first degree and third-degree rape, after 5 days of deliberation. He is sentenced to 23 years in prison. His sentencing hearing will be on 11th 2020.
